Athlete Interview Series - Josh Collmenter

MLB Pitcher | Central Michigan University

PMR: Name 3 things an athlete needs to be successful.

Josh: Motivation, mental toughness, adaptability

PMR: When it's all said and done and you move on to be successful in the next phase of your life, how would teammates you respected remember you as a teammate?

Josh: Showed up everyday, never took things too serious, always put in work, guy you could grab a beer with

PMR: Is there anything specific you've done consistently over your career to keep you in the game?

Josh: Tried to learn or experiment with new things to see if any of those things could help better my skill set

PMR: Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your high school self?

Josh: There’s always someone else gunning for the exact same spot on the exact same team, if you ever lack motivation, there it is

PMR: How do you manage adversity or what tools do you use in dealing with adversity?

Josh: I try to not take much too serious. There are only few things that actually matter or can effect things in one’s life

PMR: Name a coach, teammate, or mentor over the course of your career that has had the biggest impact on you and why?

Josh: Mike Villano, college pitching coach. Always prepared me not necessarily just for college baseball, but for the next level and taught me to be the best of my abilities, not envious of what someone else could do.

PMR: What is the greatest, or one of the greatest lessons you've learned through the process?

Josh: The importance of routine. Sticking to a routine will help keep you from going too far astray or getting too high or low.

PMR: What are your thoughts on pre-game/pre-practice mental and physical preparation and their role in player development?

Josh: Physical preparation is paramount. Keeping your body as close to 100% as you can will have a tremendous impact on your confidence and mindset in the game. Mentally, it’s important to keep things as simple as they can be. Trying not to clog up the mind as it will get in the way.

PMR: In order to continually test yourself physically and mentally you must have a strong "why". What is your "why"?

Josh: Pure love of the game and the feeling of competition at the highest level. And it’s a ton of fun.
